Hydrangea quercifolia

  • Native to the SE United States

  • Upright, multi-stemmed, perennial, deciduous shrub

  • Prefers moist woods and stream banks

  • Grows best in organically rich, well-drained soil with medium moisture

  • Mulch in summer keeps soil moist (needs some sun to bloom in mid-spring to early summer)

  • Blooming occurs on old wood so prune if needed immediately after flowering

  • Damaged stems can be pruned in early spring

  • Unique, oak-shaped leaf

  • Showy, pyramidal clusters of white flowers turn pink, then brown

  • Reddish-brown exfoliating bark on adult plants
